A review of the Rolex Submariner Date
The Rolex Submariner 126610LV is the latest chapter in a legacy of bold, green-accented dive watches that have captured the attention of collectors for nearly two decades. Released in 2020, this model marked the debut of Rolex’s updated Submariner case design with slightly larger proportions, refined lugs, and a new movement—all while paying homage to the brand’s earlier forays into green bezels. Known among collectors as the “Cermit,” the 126610LV combines a black dial with a rich green ceramic bezel insert, echoing the look of the 2003 anniversary Submariner while embracing the technological advancements of Rolex’s current generation of watches. The story of the 126610LV begins with the original Submariner Date reference 16610LV, introduced in 2003 to celebrate the Submariner’s 50th anniversary. That watch, nicknamed the “Kermit,” featured a striking green aluminum bezel paired with a traditional black dial. It stood out immediately—Rolex had never before released a Submariner in such a color combination—and it laid the groundwork for green to become a signature accent within the collection. The Kermit was followed in 2010 by the 116610LV, better known as the “Hulk.” With a matching green dial and green ceramic bezel, the Hulk embraced a bolder, more modern aesthetic, housed in the bulkier “Super Case” and featuring Rolex’s newly developed Cerachrom bezel insert. It became a sensation, appreciated for its unapologetic presence and vivid color. When Rolex discontinued the Hulk in 2020, speculation mounted about what would follow. The answer was the 126610LV. With this reference, Rolex returned to a more restrained color balance, reviving the two-tone look of the original Kermit but with modern materials and proportions. The watch features a 41mm stainless steel case—up from the previous 40mm—but its slimmer lugs and more tapered bracelet make it wear elegantly despite the size increase. The green Cerachrom bezel insert is a vibrant forest shade that changes subtly in different lighting conditions, offering a depth and durability that aluminum could never achieve. The black dial, with its crisp white indices and Mercedes-style hands, offers maximum legibility and contrast. Inside, the 126610LV is powered by Rolex’s Calibre 3235, an in-house movement offering a 70-hour power reserve, high resistance to shocks and magnetism, and Rolex’s Chronergy escapement. It’s a significant upgrade over the previous generation, with performance and precision that meet Rolex’s stringent Superlative Chronometer standards. The bracelet includes the Glidelock clasp system, allowing for precise micro-adjustments without tools—ideal for daily comfort or diving applications. In many ways, the 126610LV is a return to balance. It’s a nod to the original Kermit while benefitting from all the technological advancements of Rolex’s current lineup. It avoids the flashiness of the Hulk while still offering something more unique than a standard black Submariner. As a result, it has quickly found its own identity in the Rolex lineup—not just as a successor to beloved models, but as a modern classic in its own right. With its blend of heritage styling and cutting-edge mechanics, the 126610LV represents the ongoing evolution of one of the most iconic watches ever made.
