A review of the Rolex Submariner Date
The Rolex Submariner 116610LN is one of the most recognizable modern dive watches and a direct descendant of a timepiece that helped define the genre. Introduced in 2010 at Baselworld, the 116610LN replaced the long-standing 16610 and brought with it a series of technical and aesthetic upgrades that solidified its status as a modern classic in Rolex’s lineup. The reference 116610LN continued the tradition of the Submariner Date—a model originally introduced in 1969—combining the Submariner’s heritage of underwater capability with the practicality of a date complication. The “LN” in the reference number stands for Lunette Noir, or black bezel in French, distinguishing it from other variants like the green-bezel “Hulk” (116610LV). One of the most notable changes introduced with the 116610LN was the inclusion of a Cerachrom bezel insert, replacing the aluminum inserts used in previous generations. Made from a highly durable ceramic material, the Cerachrom bezel is virtually scratch-proof and fade-resistant, ensuring the watch maintains its pristine look even under harsh conditions. Its glossy finish and platinum-filled numerals give it a refined appearance without sacrificing the tool-watch character. The 116610LN also featured the updated “Super Case”, which retained the 40mm diameter of its predecessor but offered a broader and more angular profile due to the thicker lugs and crown guards. This change sparked some debate among purists but ultimately gave the watch a more substantial wrist presence and a modern aesthetic that appealed to a new generation of collectors. Another significant upgrade came with the bracelet and clasp. The watch debuted the Oyster bracelet with solid end links and the Glidelock extension system, allowing wearers to make micro-adjustments of up to 20mm without the need for tools—a critical feature for divers wearing the watch over wetsuits, and a convenient bonus for anyone adjusting for wrist swelling throughout the day. Powering the 116610LN was Rolex’s in-house Caliber 3135, a self-winding movement known for its robustness and reliability. With a 48-hour power reserve and a Parachrom hairspring for improved resistance to shock and magnetic fields, the movement was a proven workhorse used in Rolex watches for decades. Production of the 116610LN continued until 2020, when it was discontinued and replaced by the Submariner 126610LN. The successor introduced the new Caliber 3235 movement and a slightly larger 41mm case, though many collectors still favor the 116610LN for its transitional qualities—it retains the spirit of older Submariners while incorporating modern materials and functionality. Over the course of its ten-year run, the Rolex Submariner 116610LN became a staple in both professional diving and luxury watch circles. Whether worn in the ocean depths or with a suit, its versatility, durability, and unmistakable design cemented it as a benchmark for modern dive watches. Today, it remains highly sought after on the pre-owned market and is widely regarded as one of the most balanced Submariner references ever made.
